Centre for Developing Minds

Joining Our Lab
Research Assistants and Practicum Students
Our lab welcomes enthusiastic, motivated research assistants to join! RA's are typically undergraduate students or recent graduates. They are involved in participant recruitment, running participants at testing sites, designing experiments, and attending lab meetings. Additionally, they may have the opportunity to propose their own research ideas and see them through to completion.
Research Assistants are expected to work about 10 hours a week, and to travel to testing sites. Practicum students have the same responsibilities, plus a few written requirements to earn the course credit.
We have an application and interview process that often begins about a month before each term. If you are interested in joining our team, please contact Carolyn to be added to be notified when our next application cycle begins.
Here is a guide to undergraduate applications.
The Centre for Developing Minds has one position available for a research assistant starting May 2026. This position is for up to 10 hours/week, compensated through either pay ($21.65/hour) or practicum credit, if eligible.
Preference will be given to applicants who are available for large blocks of time in the summer (especially Sunday-Thursday) to go to off-site locations. We also strongly prefer applicants who can commit to continuing in the lab next fall and winter (for pay or practicum credit).
Interested individuals are asked to provide the following information to carolynbaer@trentu.ca:
-
A CV or resume
-
A current unofficial transcript. If you are worried about any grades, you can provide a note of explanation, but the odd low grade (especially outside psychology courses) will not disqualify your application.
-
A document that answers the following questions (approximately one paragraph per answer):
-
Describe the skills, interests, and experience that you feel would make you a good fit for this role. If applicable, mention experience with kids, customer service, and interests related to this position. (Aim for 150-250 words)
-
Tell us what draws you to this specific job. We recommend that you look at the lab website to inform your answer. (Aim for 100-150 words)
-
Provide the times you are regularly available to commit to this position, beginning in May. (e.g., until 1pm on Fridays, 10-6 on Sundays)
-
Any remaining comments you wish to provide
-
Applications will be considered on a rolling basis, and all applications received by April 12th will receive full consideration.
